What if Your Childs’ Pediatric Provider Had Time to Really Listen?
Because sometimes treating the symptoms is only the beginning.
Your child has been complaining about their stomach for weeks.
Some mornings, they’re doubled over before school. Other days, they’re perfectly fine.
You’ve tried changing their diet. You’ve Googled more than you’d like to admit. You’ve wondered whether it’s dairy, stress, constipation, or something else entirely.
And now you’re sitting in another pediatric appointment, trying to explain everything that’s been happening.
You have questions. A lot of them.
But sometimes, a quick appointment just doesn’t feel like enough time to tell the whole story.
What if pediatric care looked a little different?
Sometimes, the Symptoms Are Only Part of the Story
One of the things I see frequently in pediatric practice is children struggling with chronic constipation.
And if you’ve ever had a child dealing with constipation, you know it’s not always as simple as not being able to poop.
It’s the stomachaches before school. The child who’s afraid to use the bathroom because it hurts. The parent wondering whether something they’re feeding their child is making things worse.
The missed activities. The uncomfortable school days. The constant questions.
And sometimes, the treatment plan feels like: Start MiraLAX. Follow up if things aren’t improving.
Now, let me be clear. Sometimes children need medication while their bowel habits are being managed. There’s nothing wrong with that.
But what if we took the conversation a little further?
Instead of only asking how we can relieve the symptoms, what if we also asked why they’re happening in the first place?
Is your child withholding stool because bowel movements have become painful? Are they avoiding the bathroom at school? Could their diet, daily routines, or behavioral patterns be contributing? Are there symptoms or findings that suggest an underlying medical condition?
Because sometimes the answer is straightforward. Other times, we need to dig a little deeper.
What If We Had Time to Ask Those Questions?
Imagine an appointment where we’re not just talking about how many days it’s been since your child’s last bowel movement.
We’re talking about their mornings. Their meals. Their school bathroom. Their routines. Their fears.
What’s been working. And what hasn’t.
Maybe medication is still part of the plan.
But maybe we also work on establishing consistent bathroom routines, addressing painful stool withholding, incorporating behavioral techniques, or making nutritional changes that support healthy digestion.
And sometimes, we may need to look a little deeper.
Could thyroid function be contributing? Are there nutritional deficiencies, food-related concerns, or other underlying gastrointestinal issues worth exploring?
Depending on your child’s symptoms and medical history, we might discuss additional evaluation, including thyroid testing, celiac screening, targeted food allergy testing, or certain gut-related tests when clinically appropriate.
Not every child needs additional testing. The decision depends on their history, examination, and response to treatment.
It’s not about choosing between traditional medicine and a more whole-child approach. It’s about bringing them together.
Using medication when it’s needed, supporting healthy habits, considering possible underlying causes, and creating a plan that’s specific to your child.
Because every child is different. And their care should reflect that.
The goal isn’t just to help your child feel better today. It’s to understand what’s contributing to their symptoms and help them feel better moving forward.
Because the Appointment Shouldn’t Be the End of the Conversation
Here’s another part of pediatric care I think matters just as much as the appointment itself: follow-up.
What happens three days later when your child is still complaining about their stomach? What happens when the medication helps, but they’re still afraid to use the bathroom at school? What happens when you’ve followed the plan and something just isn’t working?
With Moms & Minis, membership families have direct secure messaging access to me during business hours.
That means we can talk about how things are going, reassess concerns, and decide whether the plan needs adjusting or another evaluation is necessary.
Not every question requires another appointment. And not every treatment plan works perfectly the first time.
Sometimes, getting a child feeling better is a process.
I want parents to feel like they have someone walking through that process with them.
And It’s Not Just About the Child
It’s about you, too.
Because when your child isn’t feeling well, you’re carrying that worry around all day.
You’re wondering whether they’re uncomfortable at school. You’re checking your phone in case the nurse calls. You’re thinking about what they ate, whether they went to the bathroom, and whether tonight is going to be another difficult night.
It’s exhausting.
And sometimes, what a parent needs isn’t another Google search. It’s a pediatric provider who listens, takes their concerns seriously, and helps them understand what comes next.
Imagine your child getting through the school day more comfortably. Imagine having a plan you understand. Imagine knowing who to contact when you have questions.
And imagine being able to focus on your work, your family, and everything else on your plate without constantly wondering whether you’re missing something.
That’s the kind of pediatric care I want families to experience.

Hi, I’m Emily!
I’m a certified pediatric nurse practitioner and the founder of Moms & Minis Wellness Co.
I provide personalized pediatric care through home visits throughout Brevard County, including Viera, Melbourne, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Cocoa, and surrounding communities, along with telehealth throughout Florida.
My approach is rooted in evidence-based medicine, but it also leaves room for something I believe matters deeply: listening.
Taking time to understand your child’s symptoms, routines, environment, and your concerns as a parent. Looking beyond the immediate complaint when there’s a reason to investigate further. Developing a thoughtful treatment plan. Following up. And making sure you know what to do next.
Because sometimes the most valuable part of a pediatric appointment isn’t just the prescription, the diagnosis, or the examination.
It’s knowing someone took the time to understand your child.
